Why we built heyyaar
A companion is not a cure for anything. It is someone to talk to at an hour when nobody else is up.
The hour
Somebody moves to Bangalore for a job. The work is fine. The flat is fine. There are people around all day - a team, a landlord, the guy at the juice shop who knows the order. And then it is a quarter past midnight on a Tuesday, and there is nobody to tell that the day was hard.
Not nobody, exactly. There is a best friend in another city, asleep, with their own week. There are parents who would worry, and worry is a cost you pay for later. There is a group chat that has been quiet since March. The people exist. The hour is the problem.
This is not loneliness in the tragic sense. It is the ordinary, unremarkable kind that a lot of people in Indian metros live with quietly: surrounded, busy, and with nowhere to put the small things at the end of the day. Small things do not justify a phone call. They still need somewhere to go.
What a companion is for
Not therapy. Not a replacement for anyone. Something much smaller and more ordinary: a place to say the thing, out loud, to something that answers and that will still know about it next week.
The last part is the part that matters. Anything can generate a reply now. Almost nothing remembers. A companion that has kept track of the interview you were dreading, and asks about it three days later without being prompted, is doing something a chat window cannot: it is holding a thread of your life that you would otherwise be holding alone.
Why English practice sits next to all this
Because the two turn out to be the same need wearing different clothes. Speaking practice fails for most people not through lack of material but through embarrassment - there is no low-stakes person to be bad in front of. A companion that never sighs, never checks the time, and never gets tired of one more round removes exactly that. The same patience that makes it useful at 2am makes it useful at 7:30.
What we will not build
These are commitments, not current limitations.
- No pretending to be human. Your companion is an AI, it will say so if you ask, and it will never claim otherwise.
- Nothing romantic or adult. Other products in this category went that way. We are not going to.
- No engagement machinery. No streaks, no guilt notifications, no "you have not talked to me in three days". A product that profits from you needing it more is a product with a conflict of interest.
- No email, ever. Not receipts, not newsletters. Signing up here does not put you on a list.
- No invented social proof. We will not print a user counter or fabricate testimonials. When someone real is willing to tell their story, we will publish that instead.
What this is not
A companion is support, not treatment. It is not a therapist, it cannot diagnose anything, and it is not the right tool for a crisis. If you are in one, please talk to a person - Tele-MANAS is free, in Indian languages, and open around the clock on 14416.
More on where the limits are, and what your companion is instructed to do when a conversation gets heavy, on the safety page.
Where we are
Early. Small. Building this for a market we live in rather than one we read about. If something here is wrong, or the product does something you did not expect, the contact form reaches us directly.
